Smolt guidance device in reality

Published: 21 June 2010

When salmon and trout smolt (young fish) migrate out rivers towards the sea they need help navigating past hydro power plants. Researchers at the division of Fluid Mechanics have constructed a guidance device that will redirect the surface water and smolt towards a safer route past the power plant, instead of passing the power plant through the turbines. The guidance device is now reality at Sikfors power plant in Pite River in northern Sweden. During the summer the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) will evaluate the guidance device by following radio tagged fish.
