Jinxia Li, who last year defended her doctoral thesis at Luleå University of Technology, has written the article Lubricating Grease Shear Flow and Boundary Layers in a Concentric Cylinder Configuration with Professor Erik Höglund and Associate Professor Lars-Göran Westerberg at Luleå University of Technology.
Modeling the flow of lubricating greases for better design of bearings
– To understand how lubricating greases flows is important in the understanding the lubrication mechanism in for example bearings. Being able to model the flow behavior of lubricating greases are also of great value in the design of the geometries to be lubricated. In this study, we model and analyze the flow in a seal geometry that is common in roller bearings, says Lars-Göran Westerberg.
– One central application of the study is the transverse flow which takes place during re-lubrication process, when grease is injected in the middle of double-row bearings and flows out through the rollers and the seal. Through the study, we get a detailed picture of how the forces caused by the shear rate in the flow affects the flow behavior.
The prize will be awarded at a ceremony on May 16 in connection with STLE's Annual General Meeting, which this year is in Las Vegas. The conference, with almost 1500 participants is one of the largest in the world in the field.
