Leaching procedures and risk assess redox sensitive element.

A qualified risk assessment of material such as industrial by products or polluted soil requires one to consider the fact that the mobile fraction of pollutants is risk bearing for the environment and not the total content. Leaching tests are used in the environment sector to estimate the mobile fraction of the different elements found in a polluted material. Leaching tests are developed to simulate the conditions to which the material is going to be exposed to or to assess long time leaching properties of materials. There are many variants of leaching tests with their advantages and their limitations.
The aim of the project is to identify and evaluate alternative leaching tests that would improve the assessment of the leaching properties of redox sensitive elements. The goal is to contribute to improve environmental assessment of soils, industrial by-products and waste containing redox sensitive elements. A subsequent goal is to facilitate the work for those who order or evaluate leaching tests (e.g. consultants working with characterisation of contaminated land, the environmental authorities and the landfill owners) suggesting appropriate leaching tests for different scenario i.e. materials, elements and conditions to be modelled and to improve risk assessment of redox sensitive element bearing materials (RSEBM) both under natural conditions in situ and when such materials are used in applications such as road constructions and land filling.

The principle for the work may also be applied into different contexts e.g. coverage of mining waste, reutilisation of constructions materials and reception of i.e. arsenic contaminated wastes at landfill where the operator may anticipate the treatment needs and avoid undesirable surprises in the future.
