10 000 °C in a second

Gleeble 3800 is a state-of-the-art equipment installed in the materials lab at Luleå University of Technology. It will be used for thermal-mechanical materials testing and simulations. For example, the Gleeble can heat a sample with 10 000 °C per second.

– The equipment provides tremendous opportunities for experimental research in materials testing and process simulation. For material testing, compression testing (20 tons), heat treatment, melting/solidification and fatigue tests can be carried out, says Hanzhu Zhang, PhD-student in Materials Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

– The Gleeble is equipped with a heavy-duty mechanical systems and high-speed servo valves for fast response. The holders of the samples have high thermal conductivity to provide high heating and cooling rate of the speciemen. The servo system provides precise control of all the mechanical variables.

Hanzhu Zhang’s research is about metallic materials for applications with high temperature, as in the aerospace and automotive industries.

– To study the mechanical properties of metals in high temperature is of great interest. Gleeble can also be used for powder metallurgy that can be useful to my research. It is a technique in which materials or components are made from metal powders.

In the clip below Hanzhu Zhang demonstrates the equipment by a test in which the sample of a material is heated with 1 000 °C in 0.1 second to achieve a heating rate of 10 000 °C per second.

The purchase of the Gleeble 3800 is part of a strategic initiative led by Associate professor Farid Akhtar that is funded by SFF, where the aim is to build an infrastructure for research in thermo mechanics and tribology. For more information, see article below.
