CT Wood

CT WOOD is a research program that focusses on the digitalization of the wood industry and builds on the existing research conducted by the division of Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå on X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning of wood.

READiStrength

The project aims to improve the current concepts of saw timber strength grading towards more flexible and adaptive approaches prior to conversion at the raw material stage to make best use of Europe's wood resources.

Sawmill 4.0

CT scanning of logs is a technology that is now being introduced in the sawmill industry. In the project Sawmill 4.0 led by Luleå University of Technology, just over SEK 12 million is invested to refine the technology and make the manufacturing process more efficient.

TiiN DP1: X-ray technology in the wood value chain

Purpose:
To develop X-ray scanning in consultation with the timber industry:
– to utilise the potential of this technology for a more efficient utilisation of the forest raw material.
– to make it possible to deliver sawn timber with specific properties to the region’s smaller actors : producers of components, suppliers of timber products, joinery manufacturers, industrial builders etc.

TiiN DP5: Aesthetic and stable wooden surfaces

TiiN DP6: Flow-efficient value chains, industrial building

A three-year innovation project starting in January 2016, where LTU cooperates with industrial partners within Wood Centre North (TCN).

TiiN DP2: Technology for sorting and quality classification in the timber value chain

The goal of this project is to improve the conditions for machine inspection in order to increase the competitive strength and growth of the timber industry and of the suppliers of its machinery.

Experimental studies of capillary phenomena in bio-based materials

This project is based on the idea of promoting the use of materials and products based on forest and agricultural by-products by improving the knowledge of the moisture physical properties which affect their functionality and durability in a sustainability perspective.

Tiin DP 7: Development of wood-based components to the construction

Goal
- To develop technology and production methods for cross laminated timber (CLT) with properties significantly better than currently existing solutions on the market.
- To develop a building system for the combination of glulam and CLT and apartment modules.

BERTIM – building energy renovation through timber prefabricated modules

About 40% of the overall energy consumption in Europe is related to the building sector and represents about 1/3 of Europe’s CO2 emissions. Successful accomplishment of the emission reduction target by 2050, involves the need to increase the rate of retrofitting of the inefficient building stock up to 2.9%. In order to increase the renovation rate, more efficient renovation processes from design to manufacturing phase are needed.

Tiin DP4 - Northern Quality Pine

A three-year research and innovation project starting in January 2016 as a cooperation between LTU, SP and MEFOS as procuring partner, together with industrial partners within Wood Centre North (TCN).

C3: Increase the influx of new ideas, actors and partners in the wood industry

A pilot study aimed at increasing the influx of new ideas as well as new players and partners for the regional wood industry small and medium-sized enterprises.

FBBB 4.4 – The Future Bio-based Building and Living

Project –Tall wooden houses: building technology for tall wooden houses with a framework in CLT and Glulam in cooperation with light-weight volume elements.

TiiN DP3 - Development of industrial wood drying

The goal of the project is to achieve a more autonomous and automated drying process with improved drying quality, capacity and optimized energy consumption. The project is implemented in cooperation with industry consisting of sawmill, technology- and equipment suppliers (SME's).

New possibilities for CLT (cross-laminated timber)

The goal of the project is to increase knowledge about how the properties of CLT can be varied for increased usage. Also to investigate how CLT can be manufactured efficiently and how to introduce CLT in the existing building processes. In addition to apply to for funding in Horizon 2020 for an expansion and continuation of the project.

Wood Welding

A Challenging alternative to Conventional wood gluing

Ultra-low density fiber-based insulation material

Using natural fibres (such as wood pulps and waste plant) as the matrix, inorganic and organic substances as the additives; with an innovative mechanical foaming technique to make an ultra-low density foam with a certain mechanical strength, good fire resistance and other properties suitable as an insulation material in building.

Strength Determination by Near Infrared cameras (NIR)

The goal of the project is to conduct a preliminary investigation of the use of an infrared (NIR) camera for complementary assessment of the strength of spruce.

Master Mozambique

Since 2008, the division of wood technology at Luleå University of Technology has been cooperating with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Maputo, Mozambique within a Sida bilateral program. The main focus lies on capacity building through postgraduate training but also to strengthen the Mozambican education at MSc level.

The purpose of this study is to identify the problems that today's responsible for controlling kilns must manage. The goal is to achieve a more even drying quality, and a deeper understanding of how drying process to be controlled and made more robust.

702 Wood Kilndrying - influence of impregnability in pine sapwood

The project evaluates the problem of incompletely treated pine block with copper assets in Class AB. The main focus of the project earlier studies has been to investigate the influence of the different parameters in the wood drying process affects impregnerbarheten

705 How does the drying and grooving effect on mold

The project aims to investigate the rillningsdjup used for tongue and groove today is enough to avoid mold growth on these surfaces in long-term use

707 Benchmarking modified scots pine

The project's aim is to go through / find new trämodifieringstekniker that have market potential / opportunities to help increase the volume of sold pine.

711 Design of hubs with nailing plates and joints between the primary and secondary beams

The project aims to: a) to provide a basis for dimensioning tools for hubs / joints, b) producing characteristic values using tests for a number of different types of units. Förbandtyp selected in collaboration with industry and the results will form the basis for part a.

714 Visible wood / Swedish pine

The aim is to develop an action plan to develop Swedish pine.
