Olle Hagman, Professor of Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, leads the project, which will result in a higher value added in Swedish sawmills.
– It is very fun to contribute to that the CT technology we have been researching for many years now is being fully industrialized in the sawmills. From a virtually sawn log we get information about the inner structure which is linked to information about the outer surface. The combination of virtual and surface-based information on a log means that the system can make decisions about quality and what type of customer the log fits.
The sawmills are central to the Swedish bioeconomy and the efficiency improvements that are now being made will have a major impact on value added and profitability. The ambition of the project is that the new technology will be able to secure and refine the entire wood value chain between the forest, industry and the market.
