How can we work out a future water strategy?

Published: 22 November 2016

Ida Sandström, MSc Natural Resources Engineering, LTU, has now completed her thesis "Multi-Criteria Analysis - Tools for assessment of future drinking water supply." In this work, she has studied how to use an approach that includes a multi-criteria analysis in order to develop a municipality's strategy for future water supply.

The master thesis provides guidance on how to think and work when the current drinking water supply in a municipality is allocated several departments and waterworks. The study has, among other things taken into consideration the existing water supply capacity and water quality, risk of deterioration of water quality in relation to land use, water reserve, use of resources (mainly related to pumping needs) and the working environment. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Environment and Water Department in Örnskoldsvik using Örnsköldsvik Municipality's water supply as a case in the case study.

As part of the MCA's method development, three different ways of weighting the various indicators were assessed. In this specific case the result showed that all three weighting methods were a first option for a future water supply in Örnsköldsvik.
