Environmental Management in City of Stockholm

Published: 1 February 2019

The environmental management in the city of Stockholm mission is to ensure that everyone in Stockholm lives in a healthy and wholesome environment. In the area of water, the environmental management is developing city-wide action plans and programs about the measures that should be taken in order to comply with EU water directives. In Stockholm's urban environment, this work is mainly about taking care of and purifying the stormwater.

Participation in DRIZZLE

The environmental administration in Stockholm participates in DRIZZLE in order to be able to take part in the development of new methods for stormwater treatment regarding both quality and quantity. The city needs to take comprehensive measures to purify stormwater so that the environmental quality standards for water are in compliance with the EU water directive. There is a great need to develop surface-efficient treatment techniques and facilities that work in a dense urban environment.

DRIZZLE's vision and strategy are in line with the city's Action Plan for good water status and the city's stormwater strategy, both of which were adopted by the City Council in March 2015. Stockholm City's commitment In DRIZZLE is to offer space to develop "cases" for urban stormwater management where new technology and research can be tested. Therefore, Stockholm city´s participation in DRIZZLE consists of in-kind contribution in form of participation in the board, participation in projects and financing of the municipal PhD student Lisa Öborn.
