Reliable modeling of green infrastructure in green urban catchments (2015-2019)

The main goal of this Formas project is the development of good practices and methodologies for a reliable application of mathematical models as tools for planning and assessment of green infrastructure for stormwater management in urban areas.

Calibration, validation and uncertainty assessment

Simulation models are commonly used tools for planning and assessment of urban drainage systems. As models are simplified representations of the reality, the quality of their results and the associated uncertainties depend strongly on the available measurement data. Such data is used as model input and for the estimation of model parameters, i.e. the calibration of the model. As the model results usually form the basis for important decisions, knowledge of their uncertainties is crucial.

The goal of the project is to develop suitable methods and recommendations for reliable model applications in practice. In view of the need to develop sustainable systems for stormwater drainage, the project focuses on models for green infrastructure and small to medium sized urban catchments with large amounts of green areas. Such models are used to simulate stormwater runoff quantity and quality from single facilities as green roofs or infiltration swales, as well as entire catchments.

The project is based on a measurement program in a small test catchment and pilot facilities. Based on the collected data, methodologies for the reliable application of commonly used modeling tools will be developed and evaluated.

The resulting recommendations should support the planning of sustainable solutions for stormwater drainage.

The project is financed by The Swedish Research Council Formas, Luleå municipality, Skellefteå municipality, Vakin AB, Galären AB and Stormwater&Sewers at Luleå University of Technology.
