Microplastics course and workshop in Oulu - Finland

Published: 9 December 2019

From 3 to 5th December, the PhD students Katharina Lange and Brenda Vidal, Stormwater&Sewers/Luleå University of Technology, participated in a workshop and course about microplastics titled “Development and challenges related to sampling, analysis, removal and environmental impact assessment of microplastics” organized by the University of Oulu in Finland.

The RaMiKo project (Removal of nutrients and microplastics in treatment wetlands purifying sewage water in cold climate regions) workshop was held during the first day and gathered experts from Finnish universities, students and PhD students as well as companies and local authorities. The course was held on 4 – 5 December and comprised lectures and learning activities such as microscopy and automated micro plastic analyses. The main outcome of the event was that the knowledge on microplastics, their fate, effects and analysis is to date very limited and that more integrated and multidisciplinary research will be needed in the future.
