Ico Broekhuizen’s main research topic is the modelling of urban drainage systems with a special focus on green infrastructure in small and medium sized urban catchments. His current work aims to develop guidelines on how practitioners can model urban drainage systems that contain green infrastructure in a reliable way. This includes topics such as data requirements, model calibration and validation, and techniques for assessing uncertainties that arise at different points in the modelling process. The modelling is done using both spatially distributed urban drainage models (MOUSE and SWMM) and the gridded MIKE SHE model.

Before starting his PhD Ico attended the master programme Climate Sensitive Urban Planning & Building at LTU, where he worked with simulating wind, solar access and microclimate in urban areas. His master thesis focused on the application of various wind simulation software packages by urban planners. Before that his bachelor thesis dealt with using time-series modelling to predict groundwater levels in a built-up area.
