Can you contribute data to increase knowledge about basement floods?

Published: 9 December 2021

The occurrence of basement floodings leads to financial costs and other inconveniences for residents and property owners. We are currently conducting a study to investigate how large a proportion of basement floodings occur due to blockages in the sewer pipes or due to precipitation.

The study further aims to investigate the relationship between various external factors and the frequency and extent of basement flooding using statistical methods. This aims to contribute knowledge that can contribute to increased proactive maintenance of sewage networks.

Some water and wastewater principals have already contributed data, but we would need more. If you have documented the basement floods that have occurred in the municipality you work in, you are very welcome to contact us who work in this project. Data that we are interested in:

  • Location of basement flooding (property designation and / or address)
  • Date of the flood

Cause of flood (precipitation, blockage, or other)

  • Cost /insurance claim for flooding in basements (if documented)

In this project, all information about damages and associated costs for different property types and from different informants will be handled together. This means that no specific costs for specific properties will be able to be tracked or published. All project participants (me and my supervisors) for this research are prepared to sign confidentiality agreements regarding the use of your information.
