Project on spatial planning development granted

Published: 15 May 2020

In stage 1 of the Formas call ”Planning for Transformation”, Maria Viklander, Luleå University of Technology, together with Östersund Municipality and Malmö City’s water company VA SYD, was granted funding to further develop the project “Achieving sustainable stormwater management in existing development” and submit a larger project application in the stage 2 call in autumn.

The aim of the project is to evaluate how spatial planning can contribute to reach a sustainable stormwater management in areas where growing population and progressing urbanization, aging conventional (water) infrastructure with declining performance, and changing climate pose many challenges, both locally and globally. The project is based on Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), a holistic approach to achieve a sustainable urban environment, by restoring natural processes through biomimicry and ecological engineering; it will also use a living lab approach in two municipalities.

Further, this project contributes to achieving several of the Swedish Environmental Quality Objectives and the UN SDGs.
