Urban Water Seminar and Business Day 2020

Water supply and drinking water quality were discussed during this year's edition of this recurring seminar. The challenges of global warming and environmental toxins in water sources that we now have to deal with were hot topics.

During the day, we heard municipal companies from Stockholm, Sundsvall and Gällivare / Malmberget talk about their specific conditions, challenges and opportunities to ensure a good supply and high quality of the drinking water for their citizens.

- The urban water industry is not looking for the heroes who want to shine, here we are more of the quiet and patient kind, said Daniel Hellström from the municipal company Norrvatten, which supplies about 620,000 people in the Stockholm area with clean drinking water from, among others, Lake Mälaren.

Aging infrastructure, population growth, global warming and increasing occurrences of microplastics and chemicals are probably the biggest challenges that all municipalities have in common. The result of climate change can also be major rainfall, floods or extreme drought and forest fires that in different ways also can affect our access to clean drinking water.

- This was a successful event and I hope our students were inspired, says Annelie Hedström, researcher in urban water engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Among the invited speakers were representatives from Norrvatten, AFRY, RISE, MittSverige Vatten och Avfall AB (MSVA), Skellefteå and Luleå municipalities, Vatten & Miljökonsult AB, Tyrens, WSP and Luleå University of Technology. The urban water seminar was organized for students who study on the Master Programme in Civil Engineering, The Master Programme in Natural Resources Engineering and the Higher Education Diploma Programme in the Built Environment.
