Optimal control of wood drying

Published: 27 April 2012

The long term goal with this project is to produce a superior system that can minimize energy consumption – while maintaining the drying quality – of kilns.

At a sawmill there may be more than forty kilns running simultaneously. The heat is supplied from a single boiler, and waste heat that is not consumed can be used to produce electrical energy. The long term goal is to produce a superior system that can minimize energy consumption while maintaining the drying quality of a group of kilns. The system must also be able to meet the demands of the variation in the residual heat coming from the subsequent production of electrical energy.
