New features and fast 5G network

The 5G work at Luleå University of Technology is entering a new intensive phase. For example, local breakout and indoor coverage are new features. The 5G network in Luleå is also fast – download speed has been measured at 1.9 gigabits per second.

Local breakout opens shortcuts for data traffic in the 5G network and servers and other resources near the end user can be accessed significantly faster. Also, indoor coverage on the university campus in Luleå creates faster and easier 5G roads.

– With our new functions, we can offer 5G tests indoors and the opportunity to try 5G applications where the requirements for low delay are very high, says Karl Andersson, Associate Professor of Pervasive and Mobile Comupting and project manager.

– We also plan large-scale testing of industrial 5G modules together with our industrial partners Telia, Ericsson, Infovista and BI Nordic.

Collaborations for good results

The 5G work at Luleå University of Technology is carried out within the framework of the regional fund projects Wireless Innovation Arena and 5G för vård och omsorg i Övre Norrland and the Interreg Nord project Arctic 5G Test Network. In addition, funds have been granted by the Kempe Foundation and the University's Lab fund. The idea is that collaborations will create new innovations to be tested in the 5G test bed.

Due to new legislation, the commercial launch of 5G in Sweden has been delayed. This might contribute to an increased need for innovation and test platforms connected to 5G.

– I am delighted that we have achieved such a fine collaboration between companies, our researchers and interested students in this fast-moving 5G area, says Karl Andersson.
