Mining Boom brings jobs and growth

Published: 2 January 2015

On behalf of the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten, a group of researchers at Luleå University of Technolgy has examined the effects of the mining industry boost. The report shows overall that we need deeper knowledge of how mining and mining establishments affect the regional economy, mainly in the form of increased income and employment opportunities.

–  Most indications are that the mining operations will be of great importance in the future for Sweden´s ecomomic growth and especially for the northern parts of the country, says Björn Öhlander.

The research report concluded that a well-run management of environmental and social responsibility can help the booming mining industry to become an even more powerful engine for innovation and positive social than it is today and contribute to long-term sustainable growth.

Another conclusion is that the disused mining areas not to be seen as degraded nature. Significant added value such as mining tourism could be created if the will, creativity and determination are available. This is a given transition area where small businesses and entrepreneurs can make great contribution to the political and regulatory conditions are right.

Despite recent setbacks including Northland Resources problems with the mine in Pajala in progress, the expansion of the mining industry in Sweden is still booming. In Laver outside Älvsbyn, Boliden are planning a huge open-pit minre for copper extraction. LKAB have plans for several new mines in the ore fields of Malmfälten. The mining industry's importance to the community development and infrastructure in Sweden, and not least in The County of Norrbotten, can hardly be overstated.

–  The lack of knowledge of both the public and decision makers of the mining industry's importance is a danger to the positive development, says Björn Öhlander, Professor and Head of the research subject Applied Geology at Luleå University of Technology.

The project is a collaboration between the research topics ore geology, applied geology and economics at Luleå University of Technology. Read more via the link below:
