Cooperation agreement on mining research in Peru

A month before the Swedish Embassy officially will rededicate in Peru, after having been closed since 2011, an agreement between Luleå University of Technology and Universidad Nacional San Augustin (UNSA) Arequipa in Peru, were signed, for a multiannual cooperation on mining research and education.

– Cooperation between universities includes research and training in the mining area, help to build laboratory and procure analytical equipment, but also research and education on social, environmental and social issues surrounding mining. We hope that our cooperation will contribute to the development of a more sustainable mining in the country, the people and the environment in Peru, says Johan Sterte, Vice- Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.

Most recently Peru's honorary consul in Lima was contacted by the University Universidad Nacional San Augustin (UNSA), Arequipa, regarding a request for cooperation with Sweden on mining research and education. This led to Luleå University of Technology, Sweden's national mining university, came to visit the University of Arequipa a few months ago. Now in October, representatives of UNSA and Peru's ambassador came to Luleå University of Technology.

In connection with this, a bilateral agreement was signed on October 14 between Luleå University of Technology and Universidad Nacional San Augustin (UNSA), Peru, by Johan Sterte, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology and Dr. Rohel Sánchez Sánchez, Vice Chancellor at the Universidad Nacional San Agustin, Peru.

– An important agreement in the cooperation agreement is to build up an International Mining Research Center in Peru. The exchange program in the agreement about education includes students not only from Peru but also from Chile, Ecuador and other South American countries. The agreement between the universities in the miningresearch and education also aims to improve conditions for the people of Peru, said Dr. Rohel Sánchez Sánchez.

- UNSA know that Sweden is a high-tech country, a democracy with social security for its citizens and with great knowledge of the mining business. We can help with getting into a modern way of thinking when it comes to research and training in the mining business that also may play a role in community development in Peru, says Jenny Greberg, deputy scientific director of Future mines one of  the Areas of excellence in research and innovation at Luleå University of Technology.
