Students at international conference

Over the years, the Conference Fennoscandian Exploration and Mining - has provided a comprehensive picture of what is happening in mineral exploration and mining in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Northwest Russia. Trade fair being held in conjunction with the conference included this year over a hundred exhibitors. LTU participated four students who represented the school during the three intensive conference days.

The conference is since some years back held in Levi in ​​northern Finland and this year between 3rd and 5th of November. Four students, two graduate students and two teachers participated from Luleå University of Technology, partly to represent the school but also to make contacts. A wide variety of exhibitors and lecturers attended from countries including Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Greenland, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Australia and Canada.

–  The conference was very busy with plenty to see and do. Although we had our booth to take care of so we had time to mingle and make contacts. Many companies were interesting to talk to as SGU, GEUS, Agnico Eagle. I was fortunate to get in touch with a news site about mines that ended in a job as an article writer, says Tobias Wiberg Steen, student at The Master Programme in Exploration and Environmental Geosciences at Luleå University of Technology.

The opportunities to network was great, as was demonstrated already during the first mingling evening, the students also were invited to a special lunch with some business representatives.

Among the lectures Endomines excelled for its slightly odd idea. The company released during the lecture day a gigantic package of geological data on the Karelian Gold Line in Finland in order to announce an open competition. The contest is that everyone who wants to can analyze the data and suggest areas and methods appropriate for further investigation, the best suggestion will win a prize of 40 000 €.
