Hardware security module to the InfoSec lab
Tieto is lending Luleå University of Technology a hardware security module, a HSM. The HSM will be a valuable contribution to the Information Security lab, the InfoSec-lab.
– The HSM will integrate existing laboratory infrastructures by offering hardware-based encryption mechanisms, says Ali Ismail Awad, Associate Professor of Information Systems.
Pasi Hautamäki at Tieto Sweden AB, says that the HSM probably will give Luleå University of Technology at lead in the area of encryption. A HSM is an essential and important component when making safe security solutions.
– Tieto has cooperated with the university for many years. For example, many master students have done their master theses with us, says Pasi Hautamäki.
– Knowledge about encryption will get even more important in the future. When working with information security, you have to be able to protect and secure data, information must be encrypted, and encryption keys must be stored in a safe way.
According to Ali Ismail Awad, the module will be used in both education and research. In the education direction, students in the Information Security Master programme can utilize the HSM in several use cases linked to the contents of the programme courses.
– The current challenge is to develop use cases as guidelines for the students, says Ali Isamil Awad.
In the research direction, the HSM complements other facilities in the InfoSec-lab such as biometrics and radio frequency identification (RFID) where data encryption can be embedded as one of the system components.
