Arya Vijayan
Luleå University of Technology
Arya Vijayan’s research is focused on stormwater and snow melt quality, and snow handling in urban environments. Every winter, hundreds of thousands of tons of snow need to be removed from cities in cold climates, in order to maintain good mobility and traffic safety. Such snow is polluted with a wide range of substances depending on the land use, activities and materials found in the environment. In her doctoral project, Arya investigates how these snow pollutants are distributed further in the environment. She also assess the feasibility of environmentally safe disposal of urban snow. The focus will be on stormwater and snowmelt quality, snow removal and disposal processes, and the assessment of environmental issues and impacts caused by snow disposal. The influence of applications of management interventions in the form of source controls and pre-treatment of disposed snowmelt water will also be studied
