Günther’s research focuses on mathematical modelling of urban drainage systems. Current activities deal with problems related to urban drainage in cold climates and green infrastructure, and include also comprehensive field measurements. The application of methods for systems analysis, i.e. model calibration and the analysis of uncertainties and sensitivities is an important emphasis of Günther’s research.

The focus of his PhD (University of Innsbruck, Austria) was the application of models as software sensors in sewer systems and urban catchments. It addressed also issues related to model applications in real time. Furthermore, Günther has been involved in projects on surface water quality modelling, water footprint assessment and the development of software tools. Beyond urban water management, Günther has experiences in surface water modelling for the purpose of flood risk management and river morphology and ecology.
