Get added to the PhD Student Association email list
Most of the communication from both the PhD Student Association and the University (events, newsletters and important announcements) is sent to a global email address to which we do NOT own any rights. To receive important information when you start your doctoral studies, you need to be manually added to the local doctoral mailing list of your institution: ETKS, HLT, SBN, SRT or TVM doctoral students.
How do I know if I am on the mailing list?
- Check on your internal ITS Admin page EMPLOYEES > TOOLS > Password, PIN, Room (ITS Admin) External link, opens in new window. in which mailing lists you are registered. *requires an LTU account
- If you do not find doctoral student mailing lists there: contact your departmental administrator responsible for your department and ask them to be included in your local doctoral student mailing list (see how to find their contact below).
- Here is a template email to send directly to your local LTU administrator
Hi,
I am a PhD student at <YOUR DIVISION and DEPARTMENT>.
I can see in my ITS-Admin page that I am not a member of the <YOUR DIVISION and DEPARTMENT> PhD student email lists. I am missing out many useful emails and events that are necessary for me to know about especially as I recently started working here. I need to be included in these lists as soon as possible to get information about my PhD studies as well as work conditions.
Could you add me to the local PhD email list as soon as possible? Thank you.
Regards,
YOUR SIGNATURE
Who is responsible for the email lists?
The local LTU administrator at your institution is responsible for manually adding you to the PhD email list. We cannot do this on their behalf. Please find their contact via the internal webpage Professional Serivces. The administrative team for your department (ETKS, HLT, SBN, SRT or TVM) are listed there.
*requires an LTU account.
Ask your supervisor/colleagues who is the local administrator responsible for your department.

Social activities
To keep up to date with the activities organized for doctoral students, you can follow the doctoral section's page on Facebook. The PhD Student Association regularly organizes social activities that are open to all doctoral students. Our goal is to create opportunities for doctoral students to connect with each other while doing something fun. Some examples of past events are: afterwork, career development workshops, fika for PhD students, laster tag, hikes and game nights. So keep an eye out for events on our Facebook page and take the opportunity to get to know your fellow doctoral students.
If you are interested in what is being organized or if you have any suggestions, please contact the local representative of the doctoral student section management group at your institution. Introductions given to new doctoral students vary between institutions and your local doctoral representative can help you get the information you need.
Become a member of the PhD Student Association. The doctoral student section is part of the student union at Luleå University of Technology. By being a member, you can, among other things, take part in patronage student discounts and for a discounted price on the activities that doctoral student sections organize. In addition, it helps us influence the conditions for postgraduate students at LTU and the content of postgraduate education.
Information for employed doctoral students
As an employed doctoral student, you have the same rights as other employees at the university, including health care and occupational health care. More information about what applies to doctoral students can be found on the page for postgraduate education and more generally for your rights as an employee at LTU is the internal employee web.
Information for grant holders/other forms of employment
Health care - Scholarship holders are not entitled to health care/style cards.
Insurance cover - The head of department is responsible for providing information to the scholarship holder about the conditions that apply to the scholarship. It is particularly important that the scholarship holder receives information about the insurance cover that applies during the scholarship period. The scholarship holder should be made aware of the importance of insurance coverage and be encouraged to contact insurance companies to take out their own life and accident insurance.
LTU has taken out collective insurance "Statens grupp- och individförsäkring" with Kammarkollegiet for scholarship holders. The insurance includes protection in case of acute accidents, acute medical and dental care, home transport protection, property protection, liability protection and legal protection. The insurance conditions are available on the staff website.
Illness - Scholarship holders from abroad are only entitled to emergency medical care, after which they must be treated in their home country. It is therefore important to have your own private health insurance. For possible entitlement to sickness benefit, please contact Försäkringskassan.
Scholarship amount - The minimum scholarship amount is linked to step 1 of the salary scale for doctoral students minus tax. Payment of education grants should be made every three months.
Communication
The PhD Student Association works to keep doctoral students informed about what is happening at LTU and the Swedish Academy. We make sure to inform about current events, career opportunities and changes in rights and regulations. The doctoral student section regularly sends out a newsletter to all doctoral students at LTU via e-mail and also shares information on the doctoral student section's Facebook page External link.. As an association, we would like to hear your ideas and wishes. Do not hesitate to contact the doctoral student section, or attend one of our regular member meetings, if you have any questions or concerns.
Doctoral education and work environment
The PhD Student Association works continuously to ensure that all doctoral students receive the education they are entitled to and that they have a good working environment. The PhD Student Association is constantly working to continue to improve both the education and the work environment for all doctoral students at LTU. If you have any suggestions or if you would like to get involved in these issues, please contact us and help us in the work to improve the education and work environment for all doctoral students at Luleå University of Technology.
Doctoral student representative
If you as a doctoral student feel a need to discuss your work situation, supervisor or similar with an impartial person, contact the doctoral student representative.
The Supervisor Award
In order to draw attention to good supervisory efforts in doctoral education, the Teknologkåren in collaboration with the Doctoral Student Section in October 2008 established a prize for commendable supervisory efforts. You as a doctoral student at LTU have the opportunity to nominate supervisors for this award. The prize is awarded at the academic ceremony in November. The winner is chosen by a jury consisting of the President of the Student Union and doctoral students appointed by the PhD Student Association.

About the PhD Student Association
Context
The purpose of the PhD Student Association at Luleå University of Technology is to safeguard the interests of doctoral students in general and to participate in the development of doctoral education. This is mainly done by representing doctoral students in various bodies within the university, such as the university board and the faculty boards. The doctoral student section also has representatives in the departments' management groups, which provides increased opportunities to monitor doctoral student issues at departmental level.
The section board
The Section Board handles the day-to-day operations of the Doctoral Student Section and consists of a chairperson, secretary and at least three other members. Mainly current issues are discussed in boards and committees where the section is represented.
A part of the Student Union
The PhD Student Association is one of the seven sections of the Student Union and holds two of the total 35 seats in the Student Council, which is the highest decision-making body of the Student Union. All important strategic decisions are made at the Union's Council meetings, which are held about eight times a year.
Since the Student Union is represented in almost all decision-making groups at Luleå University of Technology, such as the University Board and the Faculty Boards, this is another channel of influence in addition to the doctoral student section's own seats. Teknologkåren's main areas of work are labor market, education monitoring and study social issues.
