People who made it possible
Ever since its inception, Luleå University of Technology has been privileged to receive several gifts and donations. Every support, large or small, makes a crucial difference in research and education. Gifts and donations are a trust that we manage well and create social benefits. Here are some that have made it possible for Luleå University of Technology.
Elsa and Sven Thysell
Elsa and Sven Thysell's foundation for research in Structural engineering was established in 2002 and has since 2005 annually on 11 occasions so far distributed more than SEK 3 million to research at Luleå University of Technology.
Sven Thysell says in 2013 in a publication from LTU:
Over the years, as I said, my feeling for Norrbotten has been strengthened and I would very much like to work for the county to develop in all areas. ... I think it is important that we use and process the diversity of Norrbotten products that exist.
Sven Thysell, born in 1916, passed away on the night of May 27, 2020.

Rune Andersson
Rune Andersson is the donor and founder of the Rune Andersson Jubilee Foundation. He came to (then) Luleå University as the first employee in 1971, after graduating as a civil engineer from Chalmers in Gothenburg. He began his career by building up what became Luleå University of Technology. Today he runs the Mellby Gård group of companies, a group consisting of companies in industry and trade.
Rune Andersson Jubilee Foundation wants to create opportunities for students at Luleå University of Technology to complete part of their education in countries with rapid economic development (such as the BRIC countries, Brazil, Russia, India or China but also other countries with rapid economic growth).
Caesar and Ragnhild Wiberg
Thanks to a donation from Caesar and Ragnhild Wiberg, the rebuilt Wibergsgården was inaugurated in October 1992 at its present location. The farm house has much older ancestry, originating from Sjulnäs in Piteå municipality. The tax list from 1665 mentions the homestead to which the house then belonged.
Ruth and Sten Brand
The Rut and Sten Brands Foundation was established in 1997 to promote Rock engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote and support the scientific field of rock engineering with rock mechanics at Luleå University of Technology, mainly through scholarships and grants for – technologists' travel – course development – teacher training. A total of SEK 18.5 million has been donated by the Brand couple.
Sten Brand had a long background in the mining industry and was among other things responsible for the supervision of the work environment in Norrbotten mines between 1974 and 1987. After his retirement in 1987, Sten Brand became more and more involved at the University, including teaching courses in mineral technology. Sten Brand passed away in 2017 and his wife Rut Brand, who initiated the fund, died in 2009.
