Application process, Conducting
Your application in three steps:
1. Apply at www.universityadmissions.se
2. Submit portfolio and personal letter
3. An interview via Skype or Zoom
The University seeks applicants who demonstrate cognizance, introspection, and self-sufficiency in their artistry, in addition to high-level musical competence. In the interview, it is therefore particularly advantageous if the applicant can already, in the application, indicate a possible direction for the upcoming thesis project. Since there is no ready-made model, it is positive if the applicants are passionate about something specific and already know what they want to delve into and what goals they want to achieve.
The three steps of your application
1. Apply at universityadmissions.se External link.
Last day of application is found on the Master Programme website and on universityadmissions.se External link..
2. Audition
The admission test for conducting consists of two parts:
- Orchestra conducting
- Choir conducting
The test assesses skills such as technical competence, gesture, musical expression, and communication. Admission tests are selection-based.
The orchestra test requires a high-quality video recording in which you conduct Beethoven's Overture to Leonore No. 3, Op. 72b, with an orchestra or pianist. The recording should be in a single take and begin with you clearly stating your name. You should be visible in full body throughout the recording, with the camera positioned directly in front or at a slight angle from the front. Note that we will not accept recordings taken from behind or from the side.3.

The choir test consists of a high-quality video recording where you conduct one of the following pieces with a mixed choir of at least 8 members:
Josef Rheinberger – Abendlied
Einojuhani Rautavaara – El Grito from Suite de Lorca
Sven-Erik Bäck – Jesus think of me
Veljo Tormis – On hilissuvi (no. 1) Kanarbik (no. 7) from Autumn Landscapes
Knut Nystedt – Gloria from Missa Brevis
Scores will be sent to applicants no later than February 1, 2024.
For both the orchestra and choir tests, the following applies:
The recording should be in a single take and begin with you clearly stating your name. You should be visible in full body throughout the recording, with the camera positioned directly in front or at a slight angle from the front. Note that we will not accept recordings taken from behind or from the side.
In addition to these mandatory orchestra and choir pieces, we would like a video recording, either old or new, where you conduct an orchestra/ensemble and/or choir/vocal ensemble.
The digital video recordings should be accessible via internet links, preferably as a YouTube link. Each link must be accompanied by detailed descriptions of when/how/where the recording was made and information about the repertoire. Information about the video recordings and links to them should be provided to us no later than Sunday, March 10, 2024, and sent to antagningsprovmukom@mailbox.ltu.se.
Please note that we will also arrange an in-person audition for applicants traveling to Piteå on Thursday, March 7, 2024. For the orchestra test, we will provide pianists when conducting Beethoven Leonore. For the choir test, we will provide a choir when rehearsing one of the works mentioned and conducting another piece.
3. Interview via Skype or Zoom
An additional individual interview based on the preceding material will be conducted via Skype or Zoom after your portfolio has been reviewed.
