Cultural auditing in structural transformations of urban environments
In the project "Cultural heritage assessment in structural transformations of urban environments" we investigate how urban environments are valued and revalued as cultural environments, and how the environments are affected when the conditions for long-term preservation are changed by extensive structural changes, such as changing population structure or the impact of heavy industry.
The consequences of change for the cultural environment and how the long-term management of the cultural environment can be improved in urban planning are also examined.
The study is based on four urban environments, which are designated cultural environments of national interest. The selected national interest environments are Malmberget-Koskullskulle in Gällivare municipality, Kiruna-Kiirunavaara in Kiruna municipality, Svartöstaden in Luleå municipality, and Piteå in Piteå municipality. How have they been reassessed as cultural environments from their designation until today? What historical, social, and economic factors affect the cultural heritage?
The project is a collaboration between LTU's research subject Architecture and Piteå Museum's cultural environment department.
The project is funded by the Swedish National Heritage Board.
