About FINAST
The project contributes to the green transition and a carbon dioxide-neutral steel industry through research efforts in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Swerim and SSAB.
The overall goal of the FINAST project is to, through industry-related research and collaboration with the steel industry and surrounding society, contribute with knowledge, tools and competence provision to enable a transition to climate-neutral steel production and use.
Work packages
The research activities are carried out in two work packages where each package consists of several activities.
Work package one - Manufacturing processes and component performance
The research activities are focused on the process chain downstream from steel production and deal with the properties and performance of fossil-free steel. The goal is to take advantage of the added value that fossil-free steel provides. Here, behavior and properties are studied in manufacturing processes and when the steel is used in various components of end users who develop new steel products. Different manufacturing processes and how these affect component properties and the steel's behavior when it comes into contact with hydrogen must also be studied.
Work package two - Processes and systems in a fossil free value chain
In this work package, the research is focused on fossil-free steel production with a focus on using hydrogen and bio-based raw materials. An important question then is to develop knowledge about how biogenic sources and hydrogen gas can best be used in future steel production, partly from a process point of view, partly from a societal system perspective. Research that increases knowledge about safety when using industrial hydrogen-based energy systems is also prioritized.
