Bachelor degree in occupational therapy. Course in quantitative and qualitative methodology 15hp at advanced level and passed grade in master thesis in occupational therapy 15hp.

Course Aim

On completing the course, the student should independently and with supervision have completed a degree project in occupational therapy at second-cycle level (MASTER’S LEVEL) within the course requirement frameworks while also demonstrating:

  • An ability to prepare an adequate time plan in which the time-frames and tasks for the completion of the degree project are described.
  • A broad knowledge of occupational therapy and in-depth knowledge of the degree project’s specific subject area and an advanced understanding of relevant research and development.
  • Knowledge about and an ability to analyse, appraise and describe relevant literature, academic studies and theory in occupational therapy and closely-linked subject areas of relevance to your degree project
  • An ability to critically, independently and creatively identify problems and formulate issues of relevance to the subject that could lead to the development of knowledge.
  • An ability to plan and motivate your choice of method and an in-depth knowledge of method and ability to execute data collection, data presentation and data analysis related to the degree project’s problems and issues.
  • Knowledge and in-depth ability to synthesise discuss and evaluate results and their contributions to the subject, the profession and society.
  • Knowledge and in-depth ability to discuss and evaluate methods and ethical aspects and ability to identify future needs for knowledge development in occupational therapy and society.
  • An ability to prepare in writing an academic degree project which documents the above-mentioned knowledge and abilities and which also reflects a more detailed logical and communicative structure.
  • An ability to orally account for, motivate, defend and discuss the degree project on the basis of your knowledge of academic method, ethics, occupational therapy and closely-related subject areas in accordance with accepted practice for the ventilation of academic studies.
  • An ability to orally clearly oppose and discuss another degree project on the basis of your knowledge of academic method, ethics, occupational therapy and closely-related subject areas in accordance with accepted practice for the ventilation of academic studies.   


Design of project plan.
Completion of ethical application for the degree project.

Execution of the degree project and solution or processing of problems that are formulated.
Preparation of an academic report in the subject according to accepted international templates.
Defence of own degree project.
Critical examination and opposition of another degree project in the course.  


In order to complete the course, the student should actively seek knowledge and solve problems using an inquiring and critically reflective approach. This means that the student should take responsibility by actively contributing to the achievement of course objectives through the planning of content and time. The student works individually. During the course the student follows the research process by processing literature and articles, collecting and analysing data for the preparation of an academic degree project. The contents of the course are processed through supervision, oral and written presentations for students and teachers and oral discussions in seminars.
Course requirements include attendance and an active participation in examination seminars where the student functions as an opponent or respondent, and also at additional seminars, and preparation of a time plan for the degree project. 


All goals are examined through a written essay, its defence at a seminar and through opposition of another essay (Test 0001, 15 ECTS credits).

Grading criteria for Pass and Pass with Distinction are specified in the study guide.

A Pass grade also requires e-publication of the essay according to LTU's instructions
