Minimum 120 ECTS of university studies including 60 ECTS in the areas of Computer Science, Systems Science, Archival Science or Library and Information Science.

Course Aim

The student will be able to

  • Evaluate, analyze and design preservation strategies for different types of institutions
  • Evaluate, analyze and design organisation of repositories for different types of institutions, as well as management of said repositories

The course covers and discusses several implementations of digital repositories (e.g. dSpace, Greenstone), as well as organisation and maintenance of such repositories. The student acquires understanding of different preservation strategies, such as migration and emulation, and how different content types may influence the choice of strategies. The student also acquires knowledge on management ofdigital repositories and how thisinfluence preservation strategies, or vice versa.

Teaching is in English and on Internet for distance students or at campus for the students living here. IT support: Learning management system (Fronter), video conference system, e-mail and phone.


Written exam allows the student to show proficiency in evaluation and analysis of digital preservation strategies, organisation of repositories, and management of repositories.

In group assignments the student evaluates, analyse and design digital preservation strategies, organisation and management of repositories.

Technical Requirements: access to PC with Windows XP, microphone, Web cam and permission to install software. Internet connection (minimum 0,5 Mbps).
