Selection

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
By the end of this course, the student shall be able to:

  • describe the main features of Western philosophy from ancient Greece to approximately the year 1900
  • relate some of the issues discussed in the history of philosophy to more modern discussions
  • show basic argumentative and interpretative skills relating to problems in the history of philosophy

Contents
The course provides a basic overview of central problems and figures in the history of Western philosophy. Examples of figures presented by the course are Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, Hume and Kant. Emphasis is placed on philosophical understanding and not on the biographical or historical context of ideas.

Realization
The teacher-controlled tuition consists of lectures and seminars.

Assignment report.

Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact ETS educational administration eduets@ltu.se, no later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
