Selection

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
On completion of the course, the student should:
  • demonstrate basic knowledge in medical microbiology and immunology.
  • demonstrate theoretical knowledge and be able to apply practical skills in hygienic working methods in healthcare for the patient safety.
  • be familiar with activities for hygiene and disease control.
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of commonly occurring infectious diseases.
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of allergic diseases.
  • be familiar with the Swedish vaccination programme for children.

This knowledge constitutes a basis for coming nursing and placement courses and is a precondition for providing a secure and safe patient care in yaour future profession as nurses.

  • Bacterial cultures with microscopy
  • Hygienic practices in healthcare, including amongst other things basic hygiene procedures, microbiological purity, food hygiene and waste disposal
  • Infection, disease transmission and methods to prevent healthcare-related infections
  • Infectious diseases in children and adults
  • Vaccinations of children
  • Field studies in infection control

Realization
The studies are carried out by means of detailed objectives and instructions as presented in the study guide  The teaching form varies with individual studies, individual and group work, laboratory sessions, lectures and field studies.  Seminars are compulsory. The course includes two days of field studies where infection control policies and procedures are studied and practiced.

Examination
Medical microbiology, immunology and infectious diseases are examined in the form of an individual examination and in laboratory sessions including labreport. Infection control is examined in the form of an individual oral practical examination where students, based on different problems, apply their practical skills in infection control.  In the examination, a field study report is also included, where the student describes statutes, regulations and recommendations as well as reflecting on the possibilities/difficulties in working in accordance with these.

Alternative examination forms may occur.

Remarks
This is a first-cycle course. Study supervision is provided in the course room in Canvas. A pass grade in this course constitutes the specific entry requirement for placement courses and the degree project.
