Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and O0055H Fundamental principles in nursing, 7.5 credits O0047H Nursing: Health, 7.5 credits M0048H Medical Science A, Anatomy and Physiology, 7.5 credits M0002H Medical Science A:2, Microbiology and Infection control, 7.5 credits

Selection

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
The student should, on completion of the course, be able to:
  • reflect on and argue for the fundamental value of nursing
  • describe and explain the essence of the nursing process and its applications
  • plan, carry out and analyse systematic observations to establish normal and irregular signs of health with a focus on people's basic physical needs
  • plan and implement nursing techniques in a safe way for the patient
  • carry out, evaluate and document basic nursing interventions
  • apply a relational ethics argument regarding integrity, dignity, participation and safety
  • explain the importance of an evidence-based working approach
  • apply descriptive statistics in relation to basic nursing interventions
  • describe and apply laws and regulations with a focus on responsibility and skills and that are relevant to basic nursing interventions
  • document scientifically

Contents
  • Introduction to the nursing process
  • Basic physical needs in daily life such as breathing, moving, keeping the body clean and free from injury, eating and drinking, going to the toilet, resting and sleeping
  • Nursing interventions that meet basic physical needs in daily life
  • Nursing techniques
  • Ethics with a focus on integrity, dignity and safety
  • Evidence-based nursing
  • Systematic observations
  • Descriptive statistics with a focus on key measures and scales
  • Current laws and regulations
  • Field studies with a focus on basic nursing

Realization
Teaching and learning take place through individual studies, study assignments, laboratory sessions, seminars and field studies. Lectures are given in selected course sections. Participation in laboratory sessions, field studies, selected lectures and seminars is compulsory.

Examination
Written examination. Grading criteria for Pass and Pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.

Remarks
The course is given for first-cycle studies within the nursing programme. Study supervision is provided in the course room in Canvas. Passing this course constitutes a specific entry requirement for placement courses and the thesis.
