Course Aim
The student should, on completion of the course, have achieved a professional competence that implies, with an ethical approach, independently being able to:
  • be responsible for the nursing of patients and their relatives within the nurse's area of responsibility
  • capitalize health among persons with illness
  • apply and document interview, observation and communication methodology to identify and assess the needs for nursing in persons individuals with disease and their relatives
  • plan, carry out, document and evaluate nursing interventions in persons with illness and their relatives
  • recognize and meet the person’s experience of illness and suffering, and so far as possible alleviate it
  • carry out or participate in examinations and treatments and give prescriptions
  • adequately handle pharmaceuticals and inform the patient about the pharmaceutical effects and side effects
  • assess the need for and give information, educate and supervise
  • manage and distribute the organisation of the nursing care and collaborate with other professions
  • critically reflect on existing routines and methods and work for a nursing care centre in accordance with science and best practice
  • apply all laws and regulations in the area of responsibility of the nurse
  • identify his/her need for additional knowledge for continuous skill development
  • demonstrate self-knowledge and empathetic ability
  • demonstrate a professional attitude vis-à-vis patients and their relatives

Teaching and learning take place through individual studies, laboratory sessions, seminars and clinical education and training under supervision. Compulsory parts are laboratory sessions, seminar, participation in supervision in nursing, clinical education and training and presentation of thesis at the students’ nursing conference.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
Written individual examination in pharmaceutical calculation. Assessment of professional competence National clinical final examination for nursing degree (NKSE). The examination is individual and designed in two parts; written examination and practical test. Grading criteria concerning Pass, Pass with distinction is stated in the study guide. Only one re-examination/transfer is given for the course in relation to the placement. If there are special circumstances, additional retakes/transfers can be granted.  Special circumstances are those stated in Regulations of the National Agency for Higher Education HSVFS 1999:1.

The course is given for first-cycle studies in the Nursing programme.
Specific entry requirements imply that all qualifying courses should have passed course certificates. Specific entry requirements when the clinical education and training course takes place in study period 4 should be satisfied at the latest by the examination period in study period 2. Specific entry requirements when the clinical education and training course takes place in study period 2 should be satisfied at the latest by the re-examination period in August.
This course, with clinical placement are subject to Special rules regarding clinical placement according to Head of Department decision.
