Course Aim
After successfully completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:
  • describe central concepts in nursing in psychiatric care
  • describe and reflect on the experience of living with mental illness based on the concepts of health and suffering
  • Describe. discuss and present reasons about the importance of the relationship in psychiatric care
  • identify individual needs of individuals with mental illness
  • describe, explain, apply and critically review qualitative methods in the research process
  • document in a scientific manner

Teaching and learning take place by means of self-directed independent studies, field studies, lectures, study assignments and seminars.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.

The successful attainment of the objectives for the course is assessed via seminars and individual written exams.
The grading criteria for Pass or Pass with honors (G, VG) is stated in the Study Guide.


The course is offered as part of a second-cycle study program in specialist training to become a nurse in psychiatric care.
