Course Aim
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
  1. Based on central ethical concepts and principles, independently describe and reflect on person-oriented nursing of the elderly, related to the elderly individual's unique needs, experiences, problems and life situation. 
  2. Reflect on and apply an ethical attitude in difficult ethical situations in nursing of the elderly.
  3. Reflect on and apply knowledge of how work on fundamental values among staff can be carried out in different nursing contexts in care of the elderly
  4. Apply observation as a structured data collection method and reflect on its application within scientific studies of nursing among the elderly
  5. Reflect on research ethics issues in scientific studies of nursing among the elderly and practically apply research-ethical principles
  6. Identify the need for additional knowledge for continuous skill development

Realization
The course is given as half-time studies and is web-based. The educational perspective is based on the student having knowledge and experience. The student is assumed to be active and participating in his/her education and responsible for his/her own learning process. The ambition is that the student develops an ability to analyse, explain and evaluate the relationship between the concepts and phenomena that are studied. Learning is stimulated by individual activity, in exchange and interaction with others and linked to the student's own knowledge and earlier experience. The working methods vary between individual work, work in study groups, lectures, literature studies, seminars and directed study assignments adapted to on-the-job education.

Examination
  • Objectives 1-3 and 6. Individual written examination in the form of a literature review. The examination consists of reviewing and evaluating central ethical concepts in scientific literature and describing their application in relation to geriatric care generally, or to dementia care, or to the care of older individuals with multiple illnesses.
  • Objectives 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Group examination in the form of an on-the-job learning assignment. The examination consists of application of and ethical reflection on observations of the communication of staff about elderly patients in practical care activities.
To pass the course, it is required that the all parts of the course be completed and passed. Pass with distinction requires pass with distinction grade in the individual test.

Remarks
The course is included in specialist education within geriatric care and is given for second-cycle studies. Study supervision is provided in the course room of the IT platform that is used in the specialist education within geriatric care, NANO.r
