Course Aim
The overall course learning outcome is that after completion of the course, the student should have acquired the knowledge and skills to be able to carry out intraoperative nursing and medically indicated measures under supervision, for patients who are undergoing surgery of a general nature. Under supervision, the student will be able to apply procedures, laws, handle medical devices and maintain safe care in connection with an operation. Furthermore, the student must be able to function as part of a team. The student will be able to document intra-operative care and nursing, as well as be able to scientifically formulate research questions based on qualitative research design. The student will be able to identify the need for further knowledge in order to develop their own skills on an ongoing basis to be able to provide safe care.


Knowledge and understanding

After having gone through the course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the connection between nursing needs, risks and medically indicated measures in association with surgery
  • Explain and apply procedures for the maintenance of safe care in connection with surgery
  • Describe the function of medical devices in surgical care
  • Provide an account of different qualitative research methods and be able to formulate research questions on the basis of qualitative research design

Skills and abilities

After having gone through the course the student will be able to:

  • Perform intraoperative nursing and carry out medically indicated measures under supervision for patients undergoing surgery of a general nature
  • Apply procedures for the maintenance of safe care during surgery
  • Ensure information transfer within the healthcare team and to other professional groups is based on secure communication transfer
  • Be responsible for and handle materials and medical device equipment with a focus on safe care and sustainability
  • Apply relevant laws and regulations, as well as local guidelines

Ability to evaluation and approach

After having gone through the course the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate accuracy and judgement in the planning and implementation of intra-operative care and nursing
  • Reflect on what a professional approach means in collaboration with patients, next of kin and other professional groups
  • Be responsible for their own professional development through the identification and evaluation of their own needs for further knowledge in order to develop their skills on an ongoing basis

Teaching and learning take place through self-directed studies, lectures, seminars and placement training under supervision. Participation in seminars, laboratory work and placement training is compulsory.

Written examination and/or seminar.
Assessment of professional competence.
Achieving a Pass for the full course requires a Pass grade for all parts of the course and that all compulsory components have been completed.

Grading criteria for a Pass are specified in the study guide.

There will be only one opportunity provided for re-assignment with regard to the placement training. If there are special reasons for doing so, there may be additional opportunities granted for re-assignment. The meaning of the term ‘special reasons’ is specified in the reasons specified in the Regulations of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1

The course is a second cycle course within the specialised education programme as an anaesthesiology nurse and is a placement. This course contains components of placement training (placement components) and is covered by the Special Regulations for Placement Training under a decision made by the head of department at the Department of Health Sciences, Luleå Technical University.

A Pass grade for the placement component in this course constitutes a special entry requirement for the next placement course.

Transition terms
The programme syllabus applies from the spring semester 2020 for those students who are then admitted to the programme. The course coordinator and subject manager will approve  individual study plans for students who have been admitted to the previous programme syllabus and to resume studies after approved leave from studies in accordance with the current programme syllabus.

If a course is no longer provided or has undergone major changes, the students will be offered two opportunities for examination during the first year after the change has taken place and then once a year for another 2 years based on the official course syllabus that applied at registration.
