Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language + Swedish upper secondary school courses Mathematics 2a/2b/2c, Social Studies 1b/1a1+1a2 (specifik entry A5). Or: Swedish upper secondary school courses Mathematics B, Social Studies A (specifik entry 5)

Course Aim
Knowledge and comprehension
After passing the course, the student should be able to:  
  • Show basic knowledge in translating psychological theory and research into methodological strategies in relation to scientific problems
  • Show basic knowledge of the research process and research design
  • Show basic knowledge of concepts and methods in qualitative research
  • Show basic knowledge in qualitative report writing  

Skills and abilities
After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • On a basic level plan and carry out a qualitative study within given time frames
  • Carry out basic analyzes in qualitative methods
  • On a basic level present a qualitative study in writing and critically discuss its results  

Appraisal and approach
After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • At a basic level, interpret and critically examine results from qualitative analyzes with a focus on social science research
  • Show knowledge of and reflect on research ethics aspects

This course focuses on basic qualitative social science method and its application in psychological research. 

The following areas will be covered:

  • The research process
  • Qualitative data collection methods
  • Qualitative data analysis methods
  • Qualitative report writing
  • Research ethics

The teaching within this course typically consists of lectures, exercises, supervision and self-study. In addition, an individual assignment is included in which the students are trained to independently analyze and in writing and orally present their own collected psychological data. 

In order to achieve the course’s goals regarding knowledge and understanding , the student should independently study the specified course literature and other literature/material provided during the course, as well as take part in lectures/lessons and recommended exercises. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding skills and ability , the student must actively participate in the different steps of the individual assignment, as well as in written and oral presentation. Through the assignment the ability to plan and carry out a qualitative study and analyze and evaluate the result, as well as discuss and present the collected information in writing and orally is trained. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding appraisal and approach , the student should actively participate in the assignment and study the specified course literature. Through the assignment, the ability to reflect on research ethics aspects is trained. 

Teaching resources are provided and some communication and submissions are handled via the internet-based course platform Canvas. This means specific requirements for technical equipment and competence. 

Some parts of the course may be given in English.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
The learning objectives are examined through various forms of examination. An individual written assignment in which a written memorandum and oral presentation is included (2.5 credits, grade scale: U G). As well as an individual written exam (5.0 credits, grade scale: U G VG). All included examination parts must be completed for the final grade on the course. 

Knowledge and understandin g are mainly examined through the individual written exam. Skills and ability as well as appraisal and approach are mainly examined through the individual assignment including oral presentation.

The course replaces the qualitative part of the course P0045A. Due to overlap, the course cannot be included in the degree together with P0045A or a course with similar content. 

Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact HLT:s educational administration, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
