"Seeing the students develop is fantastic!"

Published: 29 November 2021

Erik Elfgren fell in love with teaching already in high school when he helped his classmates with mathematics. He has previously been named teacher of the year and has long worked to develop pedagogy at the university. As proof of the good work, he has now been appointed professor on pedagogical grounds.

- It feels great fun! It is proof that my commitment to teaching is actually appreciated. I have worked for many years to improve my teaching and strengthen our education, so it is nice to have received this recognition, says Erik Elfgren, assistant professor at Luleå University of Technology.
He believes that good structure and a great commitment are the basis for his educational success.

- My courses, lectures and course rooms are clear and easy to understand. I also use humor and activate the students so that they can discuss and think together. Students can use gestures, rhymes and songs mixed with repetition and discussion to consolidate their knowledge.

Do something important

Erik Elfgren says that teaching has been fun for as long as he can remember. Already in high school, he helped his classmates with math, which ignited a fire that never fell. Today, he is the training leader for the master's program in sustainable energy technology and has been praised several times for his pedagogical work. Despite many years in the profession, he still sees it as a privilege to follow the students' journey during their education.

- When I teach, it feels like I'm doing something important. I do something for the students, but also in the long run for the whole society. The students go out and become engineers and influence the development of society. Being a part of this feels like a privilege and to see how the students develop during their studies is absolutely fantastic. From being eager but ignorant students to becoming independent and full-fledged engineers. I can not imagine a better job than this!
