Filip Simán received Bergforsks award for best thesis
Filip Simán has studied the Master Programme in Natural Resources Engineeringy with a focus on ore and minerals at Luleå University of Technology. In his thesis, Filip combined artificial intelligence, AI, with ore geology and for this work he won Bergforsk's award for best thesis.
"Fantastic to be noticed in this way", says a happy Filip Simán who recently started a new job as a doctoral student in ore geology at Luleå University of Technology and Boliden.
Motivation of the jury
In his degree project, Filip Simán has successfully combined machine learning and ore geology, for automatic mapping of drill cores from X-ray fluorescence data. The work shows a broad understanding of both topics and the future potential of combining them. In addition to the scientific effort, the degree project has contributed to strengthening the collaboration between Luleå University of Technology's research subjects for Ore Geology and Machine Learning. Among other things, this has contributed to creating a new, innovative research project between Luleå University of Technology and Boliden, where Filip now has a key role as a doctoral student.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank my supervisors for the degree project who were Nils Jansson and Tobias Kampmann from ore geology and Foteini Liwicki from machine learning", Filip Simán concludes.
