Seven students at Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering has devoted much of their spare time to develop an electric sled. The students had the goal to be ready for the winter swim in Skellefteå, something they also succeeded with. The sled, which previously had been noticed in the local press, was greeted by many smiling faces and those who test drove the sled were impressed.
Results exceeded expectations
– We got an idea scholarship from the Sammes foundation to implement a project with a focus on environmentally-friendly transport and where students at Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering could work together. The result was an electric sled that can be charged by solar cells and we are very pleased with how it performs. The speed is quite sufficient given that it has limited control capabilities, and battery life is above expectations, says Hampus Karlsson, student at the Bachelor Programme in Mechanical Engineering.
The technique is very simple Hampus explains. The drive comes from a hub motor, the same type used for electric bicycles, and is powered by three batteries sitting in the same box as the control electronics. It can be recharged with a small associated solar panel or via an AC outlet.
Advantages of electric drive
– The allure of the project was to work with creative people that always surprises with interesting and simple solutions. In large parts of Asia electricity transporting is completely normal. The sled is at the forefront of this market in Sweden and I hope we can get more people to appreciate the advantages of electric traction as it is virtually silent and requires no starter cord.
– Then, of course the environmental aspect important. It may not be the cheapest alternative to make the most sustainable solution, but if we for example want to be oil-independent in the future, this is a possible way to go. When the electrification technology develops, so will the price go down, and you have to start somewhere, says Hampus Karlsson.
