In the various climate scenarios that are presented, the need for diverse technical solutions to reduce warming is increasingly emphasized since the phasing out of the use of fossil fuels is too slow. Most often, different carbon dioxide capture techniques are mentioned, but also different ways to reduce solar radiation. The symposium aims to clarify the state of knowledge surrounding these technologies and what is required to use them now and in the future.
Ethical and political issues surrounding the use of, and research on, these technologies will also be discussed. Presentations and discussions will be summarized in a recommendation for what research is needed to support the design of possible action programs.
The event is intended for researchers, students, research funders and an interested public.
Program
Geoengineering: Science Fiction or Possible Element for a Sustainable Environmental and Climate Future?
Part 1. What is geoengineering? Is it needed and which techniques are interesting from a Swedish point of view?
- How is the climate likely to develop? Are measures other than emission restrictions
needed to reduce the CO2 concentration or limit warming? - Which techniques have been proposed and which are interesting from a Swedish point
of view, for research or as possible climate measures?
a) Modification of solar radiation: stratospheric aerosols and more reflective clouds.
b) Methods for carbon dioxide capture in a Swedish context – what research is
currently ongoing and what gaps in knowledge and governance are there?
Part 2. What ethical and political issues are there that are related to geoengineering?
- Are there any laws/treaties or other conventions that regulate climate regulatory
measures, e.g. reduction of solar radiation? - What ethical restrictions should be introduced for research and measures?
Part 3. What research is needed to support developing and evaluating different technological
solutions? Panel debate.
The names of the speakers will be announced shortly.
