Elisa Barney Smith

Elisa Barney Smith is a professor at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden which she joined after a 22 year career in the Electrical & Computer Engineering department at Boise State University in Boise Idaho USA. She is in LTU’s Maskininlärning group in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering, Embedded Internet Systems Lab (EISLAB).

Forskning:

Professor Barney's research focuses on image processing and machine learning. She has applied her knowledge to solve problems in many fields such as document analysis, materials science, biomedical engineering, and groundwater remediation. In April 2019 she gave a TEDx talk on her research in the Digital Humanities.

She has been a visiting professor at University of the Saarland (Germany), LORIA (France) and Telecom ParisTech(France), and TU Dortmund (Germany) during her sabbaticals and summers. She has been a Petra Kappert Fellow, twice recently visiting the Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) at the University of Hamburg in Germany.

From 1989 to 1993 she worked as an engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in New London, CT. In 1993, she had a research internship at the NATO SACLANT Centre in LaSpezia, Italy. Her work at both NUWC and SACLANT Centre involved designing automatic target classification algorithms and systems that utilize passive acoustic data.

Pedagogik:

Elisa has experience teaching many courses, primarily in signal processing. She has earned teaching awards for course design and was a leader in implementing a flipped classroom at Boise State. She also earned secondary (7-12) teaching certification in Math and Physics for the State of New York.

In Luleå she will teach an advanced course on Document Analysis for Humanities and Computer Sciene students in addition to partnering on many other courses.

Professional:

Dr. Barney is a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and SPIE (Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers). She was chair of the Boise section of IEEE from 2000-2003, and chair of Region 6’s North-East Area from 2009-2013. She was chair of IEEE's global Student Activities Committee in 2019 & 2020. She was selected to be a Distinguished Visitor in the IEEE Computer Society's Distinguished Visitor program starting in 2023. She is currently Vice Chair of the Sweden IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter, and a board member of the SSBA (Svenska Sällskapet för Automatiserad Bildanalys = Swedish Society for Automated Image Analysis).
