About me
Denise Bergström is associate senior lecturer in English and Education at the Department of Health, Education and Technology at Luleå University of Technology.
Denise received her PhD in 2023 with her thesis Words in school: A study of vocabulary learning support in the Swedish EFL classroom. The focus of the thesis is how vocabulary development is supported in teaching materials and how educators (teachers and materials developers) understand vocabulary instruction. In her work, she studied teaching materials using corpus-based methods and she also conducted interviews with teachers and materials developers.
In her research, Denise is still interested in EFL vocabulary development from different perspectives. During her years as a PhD student, she was a part of the doctoral school Practice-based educational research (PROFS) at Luleå University of Technology and she is particularly interested in working together with teachers and study how vocabulary learning can be supported in the classroom. Denise is currently wokring on further textbook analyses from a vocabulary perspective. Besides vocabulary, Denise's research interests extends to second language acquisition and English language teaching more generally, where encounters with the target language outside of the classroom and pedagogical materials in the EFL classroom is in focus right now.
Denise primarily teaches courses on English language teaching and English linguistics, within the teacher-training program as well as the BA courses in English.
Denise is a member of the Swedish Association for the Study of English (SWESSE), the Swedish Association of Applied Linguistics (ASLA), English Education Scholars Sweden (EESS), British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and Swedish Language Teachers' Association.
