Josefin Bäckström

About me

I am a senior lecturer and recognised university teacher in nursing, specialized in district nursing. I also possess extensive expertise in psychiatric care, where I have taught, conducted research, and worked in bedside nursing. I defended my doctoral thesis at Uppsala University in 2013, focusing on family members of patients with severe burns: psychological symptoms, health-related quality of life, and experiences during the time the patient was hospitalized, and after discharge. Severe burns can serve as a model for other injuries involving long and demanding recovery processes, making the research results transferable to broader contexts. For several years, I have balanced my role as a senior lecturer with nursing positions in healthcare, spanning university hospitals and municipalities. The common thread in these positions has been to contribute to strengthening evidence based nursing and ensuring the quality of university-level clinical education environments. Teaching

I have been a university teacher since 2007, primarily focusing on psychiatric care, leadership, and organization in nursing. I prioritize integrating my research and teaching with my clinical assignments. Consequently, I primarily teach in nursing leadership education at both undergraduate and advanced levels. I also regularly instruct professional colleagues in nursing leadership and actively participate in the Nordic/Baltic Advanced Practice Nursing Educators NORDPLUS network External link., emphasizing the evolving role of advanced practice nursing in Sweden. At LTU, I serve as a teacher, course coordinator, and examiner for several undergraduate and master's level courses, predominantly in nursing leadership. Research

My research involves various collaborations within psychiatric care, primary care nursing, and leadership-related aspects of the nursing profession. I am particularly interested in understanding underlying causes and factors affecting nurses' ability to practice. I employ both quantitative and qualitative methods, with an emphasis on qualitative methods.

Collaboration and leadership

I have considerable experience in collaboration and leadership within academic institutions and healthcare. Since 2019 (reelected in 2023), I have held a national collegial assignment as a board member of the Swedish Society of Nursing. Additionally, I have contributed to national efforts in higher education quality, serving as an investigator at the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ).
