About me
I am a passionate researcher and believe that science is all around us wherein every effect has causes (except for the Big Bang). I try to understand a few of these effects and causes.
I have a strong background in fire, biochar, and biocomposites through a master’s degree from Washington State University (USA), a PhD from the University of Auckland (New Zealand), and a postdoc from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). I was one of the first people in the world to add biochar to composites in 2014 during my PhD and extensively investigated the fire behaviour of composites having sustainable fire-retardants. I have published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in reputed journals, like Nature Reviews, garnering numerous citations. I have also authored many book chapters and an entire academic book. I have over 10 years of teaching experience in Sweden, New Zealand, India, and Singapore. I have received numerous academic awards throughout my career, the most recent being the Swedish Royal Skyttean Society's prize for young researchers in 2022. I am leading (or have led) many projects from FORMAS; ÅForsk, Brandforsk, Kempe, STINT, etc. I am the Associate Editor in Sustainable Process Engineering for Frontiers in Chemical Engineering as well as an Editorial board member for Composites Part C (Elsevier); Polymer testing (Elsevier); Material Circular Economy (Springer); Polymers (MDPI).

I am also the international coordinator at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering. I am responsible for university outreach activities, student recruitment, developing Erasmus cooperations, etc.
Research
My research interests are as follows:
- Light-weight structures (biocomposites).
- Biochar: production, characterisation, and applications.
- Fire behaviour of polymeric composites, wood, and concrete.
- Composite design, polymer processing and testing.
- Sustainable fire-retardants.
Teaching
I am the examiner and teacher for the following courses:
- Fire Dynamics I (S0003B), 7.5 credits
- Fire Dynamics II (S7002B), 7.5 credits
- The Basics of Biochar (U7001B), 1.5 credits
