Professor and Chair of Musical Performance
Sverker Jullander is Professor and Chair of Musical Performance at the Department of Arts, Communication and Education, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. He has had positions as a church musician in Gothenburg and Borås, and since 1985 he has worked within academia in various capacities as teacher, researcher and administrator. He taught organ and organ pedagogy at the School of Music, University of Gothenburg, from 1985 to 2006. A founding member of the organ research centre GOArt at the University of Gothenburg, he was its Director of Research and Publications from 2001 to 2006. In the years 2009–2012, he was Director of Research Education at the Faculty of Fine, Applied, and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg.
Sverker Jullander is internationally active as a musicologist and concert organist. He has given organ recitals in Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Austria, UK, Latvia, Spain and the Netherlands. He has recorded CDs for the Daphne (Stockholm) and Toccata Classics (London) labels. His PhD dissertation of 1997 deals with issues of performance practice in the organ works of the Swedish composer Otto Olsson. As a researcher he specializes in the organ and church music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, in particular issues of musical interpretation and performance practice. His numerous publications in Sweden and other countries include chapters in books published by Oxford University Press and Routledge, and he has edited a large number of scholarly publications. In recent years, he has worked with issues concerning artistic research and doctoral education, especially in the field of music, in writings and conference papers, as well as in national and international networks.
Dr Jullander has a vast experience as a supervisor of PhD dissertations in musical performance and musicology. In the years 2007–15 he was a member of the Board of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Luleå University of Technology, and Chair of the Faculty Committee for artistic disciplines. A member of the Royal Academy of Music, he is chair of the Academy’s Research Committee. He is currently project leader of ‘Room for Interpretation: Musical Performance Interacting with Room Acoustics’, a research project financed by the Swedish Research Council.
