Ulrik Röijezon is professor in physiotherapy with a special interest in motor control and motor skill learning. His research has important applications for various health conditions, including musculoskeletal pain conditions, rheumatic and neurological diseases, as well as aging to prevent falls. Additionally, he investigates exceptionally well adapted motor control in musicians and athletes.
He has initiated and developed a movement science laboratory at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) to study human movement behaviour (link). In this lab, 3D movements, muscle activation patterns, and forces involved in different tests, skills, and activities are assessed. The lab also has equipment to disturb the control of movements and balance in various experiments, to study the central nervous system’s ability to react to and predict disturbances affecting balance and movements.
Ulrik Röijezon obtained his physiotherapy degree from Lund University in 1996. Before pursuing his doctoral studies, he worked clinically in primary care, occupational health, and a rehabilitation center for ten years. Since his dissertation in 2009, he has been teaching at various universities, but has been employed at LTU since 2010.
Teaching
His teaching focuses on functional anatomy, biomechanics, and motor control and learning. He also provides practical clinical training related to the extremities and the spine, and measurement and analysis of movement behaviour in the laboratory. Ulrik supervises students at all levels, including undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral students at LTU and other universities. Ulrik Röijezon has contributed to textbooks both in Swedish (such as “Motorisk kontroll och inlärning” and “Idrottsskada” External link.) and internationally (including “Grieve’s Modern Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy - 4th Edition”)
External link.. He is also the editor for a book on control and learning in musculoskeletal rehabilitation (Motorisk kontroll och inlärning - 9789144074177 | Studentlitteratur
External link.).

Research
His PhD focused on assessment and training of sensorimotor functions in chronic neck pain (Microsoft Word - Röijezon U Thesis_15.doc (diva-portal.org) External link.). After his dissertation, he continued researching movement control in various health conditions, primarily related to musculoskeletal pain conditions and age-related changes, but also among musicians and athletes.

Innovations
In terms of innovation, Ulrik emphasizes development and evaluation of precise objective methods for assessment and training movement functions. This involves evaluating new technical solutions, potentially bringing the motion laboratory to the clinical settings or even to the patients’ homes, using digital technologies.
An important collaboration is together with the Luleå based MedTech company Curest (Curest – Framtidens fysioterapi External link.), who develops novel solutions for objective assessments and tailored treatment using VR-technology.
Popular science
In the realm of popular science, Ulrik Röijezon has written several articles to disseminate knowledge about his research and the importance of sensorimotor control and proprioception (our sixth sense). He also delivers popular science lectures to the general public and healthcare professionals. You can find one of his popular science lectures from his professorship installation at LTU here (länk) External link. and a webinar with Curest (länk)

Fly fishing
Fly fishing has been a major interest since the age of 12. Primarily fishing for salmon species such as salmon, trout, char, and grayling, but also other fish species that can be enticed to strike at a fly. The fishing mainly takes place in the home regions of Norrbotten and Härjedalen, where Ulrik has connections. He enjoys fishing trips in mountainous environments like Miekak and Kaitum in Norrbotten, or in western Härjedalen, where crystal-clear and unregulated rivers and lakes still offer beautiful experiences. Ulrik Röijezon has also competed in fly casting for the Swedish national team, winning several Swedish championships, Nordic championship gold medals, and several medals at the World Fly Casting Championships.
Music
In addition to fly fishing, music and other cultural aspects are essential parts of life. Various forms of jazz grooves are particularly appealing. It can range from Miles Davis, Chet Baker & Nina Simone to 70s giants like Steely Dan, or the more psychedelic Pink Floyd & heavier Led Zeppelin, or newer electronic jazz grooves created by artists like Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Petter Molvær & Thievery Corporation. Among the musicians from Norrbotten, Bo Kaspers Orkester and Movits are appreciated for their jazzy grooves and clever lyrics. Classical music, such as Bach, also contributes to enriching life. 😊
