Tips for studying at home
Set yourself up for a school mindset
- Get up as usual in the morning. Do what you usually do: shower, get dressed and eat breakfast.
- Dress in your usual clothes for going to campus.
- Start and end your study day at the same time every day.
- Take a short walk of 10-15 minutes before the study day starts. This will give you some fresh air, wake you up and help you switch from your morning routine to your study day.
- Prepare your workplace for the day.
- Log in to the right program five minutes before the first meeting or lesson of the day.
Creating a workplace
- The body associates different places with different things. That's why it's important to create a workspace for your study day and let your couch or bed be the place for recovery and sleep.
- Choose a place to work. Preferably a desk or maybe the kitchen table. Maybe the ironing board can be your height-adjustable desk.
Minimize distractions
- Turn off the radio and TV.
- Close all notifications, apps and tabs that are not needed for the task you are about to work on/complete.
- Clear away from your workplace for the day any items that attract you away from the job you are about to do.
- Remember to take breaks, just as you usually do when you are on campus. Follow your usual schedule.
Breaks are important
During the day's breaks, it is important to get up from the workplace and do something completely different for a while. Here are some tips on what you can do:
- Call a friend and take a break together. Talk about something other than studying.
- Put on some nice music and dance or sing for a while.
- Stretch, stretch your body or do a bunch of burpees.
- Get something to eat or drink.
- Go out for a while at lunch.
At the end of the study day, take a break! Get your study stuff off the table and then do something that makes you feel good.
