This course is an introductory course in organic chemistry and biochemistry that will convey an integrated understanding of organic compounds and how they form the basis for the cell's molecular structure and function. The course also highlights how some common organic compounds are used commercially in the form of polymers or in the food- and pharmaceutical industries.
The course aims to give the student the possibility to acquire fundamental knowledgein organic chemistry and biochemistry in order to facilitate advanced studies in bioprocessing and chemical and environmental engineering. After the course the students are expected to be able to
§
Describeorganic chemical structures and nomenclature
§
Explain the relationship between structure and properties of some natural and synthetic polymers
§
Describe how some commercially important organic compounds are produced in industry and their properties / functionality
§
describe the biochemical reactions that happen in living organisms in order for them to be able to transfer energy and synthesize macro molecules
§
describe how biochemical processes can be used practically in the community.
Carry out, evaluate and record experimental biochemical work.
