Application fee
All applications for studies in Sweden are made through universityadmissions.se.
To apply, you must pay an application fee through universityadmissions.se.
If you are a citizen of a country within the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you are not required to pay application or tuition fees to study in Sweden.
Tuition Fee
A tuition fee is the fee you pay for your studies.
If you are from a country outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you must pay a tuition fee to study at a Swedish university.
The amount depends on the course or programme you are admitted to. You can see the exact fee when the application period opens at universityadmissions.se.
Find out if you need to pay tuition fees: Who is required to pay fees?
Please note: Our Tuition Fee Guideline for students who are required to pay tuition fees will be updated.
The new guideline will take effect on 1 January 2026. The updated guideline includes a fixed administrative fee that will be deducted from all refunds.
You can find the guideline here.
Payment procedure
All payments of tuition fees are handled in our system Ladok for student.
New students
- After you have been admitted, you will receive an email from no-reply@ladok.se with instructions on how to pay your tuition fee.
- Go to student.ladok.se and log in.
- Choose “Antagning.se / Universityadmissions.se” as your login method.
- Use the same email address and password you used on universityadmissions.se
If you see a blank page in Ladok, update your web browser or try another browser or device.
If you still cannot log in, please contact us and describe the problem.
In Ladok for students, you can view your first invoice and, if you are a programme student, your future invoices.
Each invoice clearly shows the payment deadline.
Important to know
- The sooner you pay, the sooner you can start your residence permit application. Read more here.
- Always state the reference number on your invoice and your last name when paying. The reference number is 4 digits. Do not write other information since there is a limited space for digits.
Exampel reference: 6285 Johnson. - Tuition fees are paid once per semester — instalments or yearly payments are not possible.
- International payments may take up to one week or more to reach us, depending on your bank.
- If your payment was sent before the deadline, it will still be accepted even if it arrives a few days late.
- Do not email us to confirm your payment. It will be automatically registered in Ladok, and you will receive an email confirmation once it has been processed.
- You cannot register for your programme or courses until your payment has been registered.
- We strongly advise against using payment agents or any other third-party representatives for tuition fee payments.
You can also visit our New student page for checklists and more information for international students.
Current students
Current students will get a notification from Ladok for students when it is time to pay the tuition fee using Ladok for students.
Payment exemptions
You do not have to pay the tuition fee if you have a valid work permit in Sweden when you start your studies.
If your work permit will expire during your studies, you must show proof that you have applied to extend the same permit.
Follow these steps:
- Upload your confirmation of the extension on universityadmissions.se
– Read more about how to upload documents here. - The confirmation must clearly show that it is the same type of permit that you are extending.
It must be the official current document from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).
Please note: we cannot accept links to documents — you must upload the actual file. - After you have uploaded the document, send an email to tuitionfee@ltu.se so we can register your exemption in our system.
Important information
- You are not exempt from tuition fees if you have a work or residence permit in another EU country (not Sweden).
- If your permit expires after the first invoice deadline (May 15), we cannot register your exemption until you show proof of a valid extension of the same permit.
- According to the Swedish Migration Agency, you can only apply for an extension one month before your current permit expires.
Payment deadlines
Deadline is stated under the invoice on student.ladok.se Here you also see future invoices if you are a programme student.
Payment confirmation
When your payment is registered in Ladok, your invoice will be marked as paid.
You will also receive a payment confirmation by email.
Make sure that your email address in Ladok is correct.
It can take up to one week for your payment to be registered.
If your invoice is not marked as paid after 10 days, please contact us at tuitionfee@ltu.se.
Please note that the conditionally admitted status will not change in your University Admissions profile, even though your payment is confirmed.
We always register payments that arrive after the deadline as long as the transfer was made before the deadline.
Please do not email us to confirm your payment.
Our finance department will automatically register it when the payment reaches us, and you will receive an email notification.
You will not be able to register for your programme or courses until your payment is fully registered in Ladok.
Payment reminders
If the payment of tuition fees is not completed on time, a payment reminder will be issued immediately after the due date, comprising a payment period of one week.
Effect of non-payment
Applicant students - lost place
Applicants for degree programmes or courses who have not paid the tuition fee on time will lose their place.
Active students - suspension
Those who have been admitted to and commenced a degree programme or course, and have not paid the tuition fee within one week of a reminder, will be suspended from that education. In such cases, the reminder shall contain a statement that suspension will be considered if the fee is not paid on time.
Decisions on the suspension of a student who has not paid the tuition fee take effect immediately and are in force until full payment is made. Suspension due to late payment does not confer the right to a reduced fee.

Refund of the tuition fee
Refund of the tuition fee for a semester that has already commenced is not possible except in the cases stated below.
Please note: Our Tuition Fee Guideline for students who are required to pay tuition fees will be updated.
The new guideline will take effect on 1 January 2026. The updated guideline includes a fixed administrative fee of 6000 SEK that will be deducted from all refunds.
Absence of residence permit
Students who have paid tuition fees, but are not granted a residence permit in Sweden, and for whom the admissions procedure is interrupted, are entitled to recover all the tuition fees paid excluding bank charges. If you do not get a decision on your application for residence permit for studies in time before the programme starts, you are also entitled refund of your tuition fee.
Early withdrawal
Students in degree programmes who withdraw from their studies before 1 October/1 March in their first semester are entitled to a refund of half of the tuition fees paid, excluding bank charges, regardless of the reason for withdrawal.
Application form for refund is submitted to the admission's office using the form below, which after preparation is submitted to the Financial Manager for a decision.
Special grounds
In the event of serious illness or death with regard to the student, the student's partner or member of the immediate family, it is possible to apply for a refund of tuition fees for the semester that has already commenced.
Application for a refund of tuition fees, including accompanying documentation, must be submitted in writing to a study adviser for preparation. Decisions are made by the Financial Manager. The extent of the refund will then amount to a sum equivalent to the unused portion of the semester fee paid.
Credited courses
Students in a degree programme who have been granted credit transfers from courses at another higher education institution as part of their education at Luleå University of Technology are entitled to a refund of tuition fees to an extent equivalent to the credited courses.
Bank charges
Bank charges up to a 1000 SEK will be deducted from the refunded amount.
Applying for a refund
Fill in the form below and send it and all supporting documents to tuitionfee@ltu.se
Please note that refund can only be paid to the same card/account as the payment was made from, so if you use a third party (agent/relative/money exchange) to make your payment the refund will be made to the same.
It might take up to 30 days for your refund to be processed. You will get a confirmation sent to you by email when we have processed the refund from our part. If you refund is not on your account after 30 day, please contact us at tuitionfee@ltu.se
Residence permit
Students from countries outside the EU/EEA
In general, all students from countries outside the EU/EEA need to have a residence permit for studies during a period longer than three months at a university or college in Sweden.
For Swiss citizens, there is a simplified process to apply for the residence permit for studies.
When admitted, and the fee has been paid, apply for your Swedish visa as soon as possible, at the nearest Swedish Embassy or Consulate.
Application forms are available at the Swedish Embassy/Consulate or from the website of the Swedish Migration Board, www.migrationsverket.se
Applications for residence permits are processed by the Swedish Migration Board.
Students from EU/EEA countries
If you work, study or have sufficient means to support yourself, you automatically have right of residence in Sweden and therefore need not register with or apply for a residence permit at the Swedish Migration Agency.
Residence permit for work
You are exempt from paying the tuition fee if you have a valid residence permit for work in Sweden when you start your studies. If you have a permit that expires during your studies you have to show documentation that you have applied for an extension of the same permit. Follow these steps:
- Upload the confirmation of the extension of the residence permit on universityadmissions.se see more info
- Once you have uploaded the document, email us on tuitionfee@ltu.se and we will register in our system that you are exempt from paying the fee.
